Cam belt changes on used cars

Posted on October 31, 2016 at 10:01 pm

If you are buying or have recently bought a used car then you need to establish if and when the cam belt has been changed. Some cars are fitted with chains rather than belts, but those fitted with a belt often need changing around 60,000 miles up to 120,000 miles. If the seller tells you that the cam belt has recently been changed then try and get them to show you a receipt of this or find out where I was done so you can double check. If a cam belt goes on a car then it can end up costing thousands of pounds as it often causes a lot of damage and may even make the car unworthy or repairs and therefore scrap.

When replacing a cam belt always replace then tensioners too as they are often the components that fail causing the belt to then snap. Changing a cam belt is often not a cheap job and can cost anything from £150 upwards of £300-£400 pounds depending on what the vehicle is.

Diesel vs petrol cars

Posted on September 28, 2016 at 9:35 pm

After having petrol cars for a number of years I recently switched back to a diesel. Both petrol and diesel cars have their advantages and disadvantages and often it is totally dependent on the individuals driving style and preferences.

I was always put off by diesel cars as I assumed that they would be slower but with advances in technology over the last 10-15 years or so, this is now a thing of the past. Many diesel cars now come fitted with a turbo giving them that extra bit of a boost to get going. They are usually more fuel economical than the equivalent petrol and often the engines will last longer than on a petrol car.

There are many difference ways in the way you should drive a diesel and petrol car and it is best to do your research and ideally test drive both before deciding which one to go for.

Oil changes

Posted on August 29, 2016 at 8:31 pm

So many people own cars and yet still do not realise the importance of regular services. If the car is new then you may be more tempted to keep up with a service schedule but as the car gets older people become less inclined to spend money on it.

The oil is usually changed at a service along with the filters and this can make a huge difference to the running of the vehicle. Many garages have caught on to the fact that some people do not want to spend hundreds of pounds on an old car getting a full service done so they are now offering just oil and filter change or mini services from as little as £40.

This is well worth the money and you will be hard pushed to do the job much cheaper yourself. Just this simple change could make your engine run a lot smoother and just keep it going that bit longer.

Car rentals

Posted on July 27, 2016 at 8:23 am

It may be that at some point you need or want to hire a car. Often people hire cars when theirs is in for repairs or if they are in between vehicles and need something to get them through a week or two. There are a number of places that hire out vehicles, some companies specialise in car rental alone where are other companies offer it as part of a larger organisation. Many main dealerships also have a rental department allowing customers to hire a vehicle.

Rental is normally charged at a daily or weekly cost although they may offer you a deal if you are looking to book for a month or longer. Often the price you pay will cover the cost of insurance, tax etc but you will be responsible for the fuel. You will also need to be sure that you look after the vehicle as you may be liable for costs should there be any damaged caused to it whilst it is within your care.

Buying a spares or repairs car

Posted on June 30, 2016 at 10:22 pm

If you are looking to buy a space or repair car or van you need to make sure that you know what you are looking for. It may be that you want to buy one just for the bodywork, which can be relatively easy to check that it is all ok. If however you want to use the engine or part of the engine you need to check that the parts you need are working as they should. This can be very hard as often you may not find this out until you have stripped the car down which you won’t be able to do until you have bought it.

If you are looking for a part or a number of parts, it may be worth buying them from somewhere like Ebay or a similar website that will sell them individually as often you will get some sort of warranty.
